“Better Man” by Pearl Jam

"Better Man" is the eleventh track on Vitalogy, Pearl Jam's third studio album, from 1994, and its roots go back years before the band. Eddie Vedder wrote it as a teenager in San Diego, on a four-track in his old apartment, and first played it with a local group called Bad Radio. His Pearl Jam bandmates balked at first, even leaving it off Vs. because it sounded too mainstream and poppy for them.

They came around, and it's the most openly singalong song on that prickly record: it starts small, Vedder close to the mic, then the band piles in and the chorus swells big enough to fill an arena. Stone Gossard adds guitar and mellotron, Mike McCready guitar and slide, Jeff Ament bass and double bass, Dave Abbruzzese drums, and Vedder himself throws in guitar and even accordion. Brendan O'Brien produced with the band.

It never got a commercial single release, yet it still topped the Album Rock Tracks chart for eight weeks, and it later landed on the rearviewmirror greatest hits collection in 2004.
