About Radio & Records

Radio & Records was the radio industry's leading trade publication, and its year-end Alternative chart ranked the most-played songs on modern rock stations across the United States. RockLists archives the R&R year-end alternative charts from 1994 through 2006.

Radio & Records was founded in 1973 and, based in Los Angeles with offices in Nashville and Washington, D.C., published weekly airplay charts compiled from station playlists in each format. Its Alternative chart, launched in the late 1980s, became the industry's benchmark for modern rock airplay.

The year-end charts archived here rank the songs that received the most alternative airplay nationally, making them a useful counterpoint to the individual station countdowns on this site, which reflect local listener votes and requests. R&R was acquired by VNU (later Nielsen) in 2006 and ceased publication in June 2009, with its charts absorbed into Billboard.
