About KROQ
KROQ 106.7 FM is the most influential alternative rock station in the United States. From its "Rock of the '80s" era under Rick Carroll through the grunge, pop-punk and indie years, KROQ's playlist shaped what modern rock radio sounded like everywhere else. Its year-end Top 106.7 countdowns, the Memorial Day Flashback 500 and its all-time artist polls are the most requested lists on RockLists.
KROQ traces its roots to 1972, when the call letters first appeared on 1500 AM in Los Angeles. After the station moved to 106.7 FM it passed through a series of owners, including Mandeville Canyon Broadcasting, and spent most of the 1970s as a loosely programmed free-form rock station.
The modern KROQ was born in 1979 when program director Rick Carroll introduced a tightly formatted new-wave sound he called "Rock of the '80s." Built around Devo, the Clash, the Cure, Depeche Mode and Oingo Boingo, the format turned KROQ into a ratings force and the template for alternative radio across the country. Carroll consulted stations such as 91X in San Diego until his death in 1989.
KROQ was acquired by Infinity Broadcasting in 1986, which later became part of CBS Radio and, in 2017, Entercom (now Audacy). The station launched its annual Almost Acoustic Christmas concert in 1989 and the Weenie Roast in 1993, and it was the long-time home of Loveline and the Kevin & Bean morning show, which ran from 1990 until 2019.
The station's year-end countdown, the Top 106.7 Songs of the Year, has been a New Year's tradition since 1980. KROQ has also aired numerous all-time countdowns, including the Memorial Day Flashback 500 and several Top 106.7 Artists of All-Time polls, all of which are archived here.
