About WBRU
WBRU 95.5 FM was a commercial alternative rock station run by Brown University students in Providence, Rhode Island, for more than fifty years. Its Modern Rock Top 500 countdown from 2001 is archived on RockLists.
WBRU grew out of a Brown University campus station and moved to 95.5 FM in 1966 as a student-operated commercial station. It adopted a modern rock format in the 1980s and became one of the most respected alternative stations in New England, breaking bands in the Providence and Boston markets while remaining entirely student-run.
The Modern Rock Top 500 from 2001, contributed by a listener, is one of the largest all-time countdowns in the archive. The station's FM license was sold in 2017 and WBRU continues as an online station.
