About CFNY 102.1 The Edge

CFNY 102.1 FM in Toronto, known as The Edge since the 1990s, was one of the first commercial stations anywhere to play alternative music and inspired Rush's song "The Spirit of Radio." RockLists archives its Top 102 year-end countdowns and the Top 1002 Songs of All-Time from November 1999.

Beginning with the arrival of David Marsden as program director in 1978, CFNY became one of the first commercial radio stations in the world to program alternative music, mixing punk, new wave and Canadian independent acts. Rush immortalized the station's free-spirited approach in "The Spirit of Radio" in 1980, and by the mid-1980s CFNY was internationally known and briefly available across North America by satellite.

After a series of ownership changes the station was sold to Selkirk Communications in 1985. Despite strong ratings, Selkirk moved CFNY toward Top 40 in 1988, pushing the alternative format to weekends and late nights, and much of the staff resigned or was fired. MacLean-Hunter acquired Selkirk in 1989 and rebuilt CFNY as a conventional modern rock station.

MacLean-Hunter was sold to Rogers Communications in 1994, and Rogers spun its radio holdings to Corus Entertainment in 1999. Branded as 102.1 The Edge, CFNY remains Toronto's alternative rock station and continues to hold its annual year-end countdown.
