About WNEW-FM
WNEW-FM 102.7 was New York City's legendary progressive and classic rock station from 1967 until it abandoned rock in 1999. Its Firecracker 500 countdowns from 1991 and 1996, aired each Fourth of July weekend, are archived on RockLists.
WNEW-FM pioneered free-form progressive rock radio in New York in 1967 with a legendary air staff that included Scott Muni, Dennis Elsas, Pete Fornatale and Vin Scelsa. Over three decades it evolved into a classic rock station while remaining, in its own words, the place "where rock lives."
Every Independence Day weekend the station counted down the Firecracker 500, a listener-voted ranking of the greatest rock songs of all time that was typically topped by Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." The 1991 and 1996 editions preserved here were contributed by a listener and offer a classic rock counterpoint to the alternative lists on this site.
WNEW-FM dropped rock in 1999, moving through talk and adult contemporary formats before the call letters left the frequency in 2007.
