About Fred (XM 44)
Fred was XM Satellite Radio's classic alternative channel, playing modern rock from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Its Top 2002 and Top 2044 Songs of All-Time countdowns from 2002 and 2003 are archived on RockLists.
Fred launched with XM Satellite Radio in 2001 on channel 44, programming "classic" alternative and modern rock from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. It was the parent channel of Ethel (XM 47), which played alternative from the late 1990s onward, and Lucy (XM 54), which mixed recognizable alternative hits from the '80s to the present.
Fred aired two enormous listener countdowns preserved here: the Top 2002 Songs of All-Time in July 2002 and the Top 2044 Songs of All-Time in July 2003, both deep dives into new wave, post-punk and early alternative catalogs. The channel was discontinued in November 2008 when XM merged its lineup with Sirius; its closest successor on the combined service was 1st Wave.
