About The Current

KCMP (89.3 FM, branded 89.3 The Current) is a radio station owned by Minnesota Public Radio that broadcasts an adult album alternative format, including a significant rotation of songs by local Minnesota artists. It is licensed to Northfield, Minnesota, and covers the Minneapolis-St. Paul market, with studios at the MPR Broadcast Center in downtown St. Paul. MPR launched the station's current AAA format and the KCMP call sign at 9 a.m. on January 24, 2005, after purchasing WCAL-FM, the longtime classical-music station of St. Olaf College (on the air on 89.3 FM since 1967, with station origins dating to 1918); the first song played under the new KCMP format was "Say Shh" by Minneapolis hip-hop group Atmosphere.
