About Y100

Y100 (WPLY 100.3 FM) was Philadelphia's modern rock station for a decade until its abrupt sign-off in February 2005, after which its staff and listeners kept the brand alive online and as Y-Rock on WXPN. Its Top 100 year-end countdowns for 2002 through 2006, the Top 300 Songs of the '90s and the Top 300 Songs of All-Time are archived here.

WPLY adopted the modern rock format as Y100 in 1995 and quickly became Philadelphia's alternative station of record. Its Top 300 Songs of the '90s countdown in September 2000 and its Top 300 Songs of All-Time in July 2004 remain among the most visited lists on RockLists.

At 11:50 p.m. on February 24, 2005, Y100 signed off with Pearl Jam's "Alive" after owner Radio One moved its urban station WPHI from 103.9 to the stronger 100.3 signal. The change left Philadelphia as the largest U.S. market without an alternative rock station. Program director Jim McGuinn and the staff had launched the website Y100rocks.com just before the switch, and nearly one hundred thousand listeners signed a petition to bring the station back.

Y100 Rocks broadcast online with a slightly more adventurous playlist than its FM predecessor, and on August 1, 2006, the stream was adopted by WXPN 88.5, the public radio station operated by the University of Pennsylvania, as Y-Rock on XPN. The 2006 countdown on this site, the Top 88.5 Songs of 2006, dates from that era.
