“Even Flow” by Pearl Jam

"Even Flow" is on Ten, Pearl Jam's 1991 debut, and Epic sent it out as the band's second single in March 1992. Stone Gossard wrote the music and Eddie Vedder wrote the words, and it's a churning, restless thing, Gossard and Mike McCready's guitars grinding and funking around each other while Jeff Ament's bass and Dave Krusen's drums roll like a river after a storm.

Vedder sings it in that deep, slurred rumble, spitting syllables until the words half dissolve, and the band keeps pushing him forward. Rick Parashar produced it with the band and Tim Palmer mixed it, keeping the sound big and loose rather than polished.

It climbed to number three on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The band later put it on their 2004 greatest hits set, Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991 to 2003), and a remixed version turned up on the 2009 reissue of Ten.
