About WFNX

WFNX 101.7 FM, owned by the publishers of the Boston Phoenix, was one of the longest-running independently owned alternative stations in America and the first station in the country to play Nirvana's "Nevermind" in full. Its Top 100 year-end countdowns from 1998 to 2007 and its all-time lists, including the Top 500 Songs of All-Time and the Top 50 Grunge Songs, are archived here.

WFNX signed on in 1983, owned by Stephen Mindich's Phoenix Media, the company behind the alternative newspaper the Boston Phoenix. Licensed to Lynn, Massachusetts, the station's modest signal was supplemented over the years by simulcasts on 92.1 FM (serving New Hampshire, western Massachusetts and southern Maine), 103.7 FM in Providence and a downtown Boston translator at 101.3.

The station was an early champion of alternative music in New England, and in 1991 it famously played Nirvana's "Nevermind" in its entirety before the album's release. WFNX aired its Top 101 Songs of the Decade in December 1989 and a Top 500 Songs of All-Time in June 1999, both preserved on RockLists.

After nearly thirty years of independent ownership, Phoenix Media sold the 101.7 signal to Clear Channel in 2012. WFNX left the FM dial on July 20, 2012, and briefly continued as an online station before the Boston Phoenix itself closed in 2013.
