91X countdowns

91X (XETRA-FM 91.1) broadcasts from Tijuana, Mexico, to the San Diego market and has been playing alternative rock since 1983, when Rick Carroll of KROQ helped convert it to the "Rock of the '80s" format. RockLists holds an unbroken run of 91X Top 91 year-end countdowns from 1983 through 2007, plus its all-time and decade lists.

91X began life in 1978 as a rock station owned by John Lynch of Noble Broadcasting, using a powerful Tijuana transmitter licensed to XETRA-FM. In 1983 the station switched to the "Rock of the '80s" format, consulted by Rick Carroll of KROQ, making it one of the first alternative stations outside Los Angeles. Jim Gelaro was the first program director of the new 91X, and Max Tolkoff took over within a year.

Trip Reeb became PD in 1987 and left two years later to become KROQ's general manager. Kevin Stapleford then ran programming with night talent Michael Halloran as music director. Bryan Jones hosted mornings on and off from 1984 to 1996. When Stapleford resigned in 1996, Halloran moved up to program director.

Ownership passed from Noble Broadcasting to Jacor later in 1996, and Halloran was replaced by Brian Schock, one of the original air talents from the station's 1983 relaunch. Jacor merged with Clear Channel in 1999, and Clear Channel spun the station off to Finest City Broadcasting in 2005. Local Media San Diego has operated 91X since 2010.

91X's year-end Top 91 countdown ran every year of the alternative era, and the station has periodically aired all-time countdowns such as the Fat 500 (1999) and the Top 91 Songs of All-Time (2003).
