"The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' opening shot from I'm with You, their tenth album, and it hit radio on July 15, 2011, three days ahead of schedule after it slipped out by accident. Nothing new had come from them as a single since "Hump de Bump" back in 2007, and this one marked the arrival of Josh Klinghoffer on guitar; the new man shares the writing credit with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith.

It's a sly, loose-hipped funk strut rather than a blowout, with Klinghoffer's guitar kept spare and Mauro Refosco adding percussion; Rick Rubin produced and Andrew Scheps mixed. Alternative radio lapped it up, making it the band's 12th number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, a record, and it held the top spot for four weeks. It was also their last trip into the Hot 100's Top 40.
