About 89X

89X (CIMX-FM 88.7) broadcast from Windsor, Ontario, into the Detroit market and was the region's alternative rock station from 1991 until 2020. Its Top 89 year-end countdowns from 1999 through 2007 are archived on RockLists.

The station signed on in 1967 as easy-listening CKWW-FM. It switched to progressive rock as "Ohm-FM" with the CJOM call letters in 1970 and, after CHUM Limited purchased it in 1985, spent several years as a Top 40 station. The call letters changed to CIMX in 1990.

On May 13, 1991, the station launched a full-time modern rock format as 89X, kicking off with Jane's Addiction's "Stop!" Although licensed to Windsor, 89X programmed itself for Detroit, with offices in Bingham Farms, Michigan, and a signal that reached as far southwest as Toledo. The station's year-end countdown was the Top 89 Songs of the Year.

CHUM was acquired by CTVglobemedia in 2007, which in turn became Bell Media. In February 2020 the station dropped alternative rock after nearly 29 years and flipped to country music as Pure Country 89.
