"Been Caught Stealing" was the third single from Ritual de lo habitual, released by Warner Bros. in November 1990, and it became the biggest hit Jane's Addiction ever had, parked at No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart for four weeks. All four of them share the writing credit, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins, and it sounds like a gang having a laugh: a bass line that swaggers down the block, drums that swing instead of pound, a guitar slashing in and out of the groove and Farrell's nasal yowl riding gleefully on top.

Then there's the barking. Farrell had brought his needy shelter dog, Annie, to the studio rather than leave her home alone, and she started yapping while he was in the vocal booth; it stayed on the record by pure accident, and Rolling Stone rated it the best canine cameo since Pet Sounds. Farrell produced it with Dave Jerden.

Casey Niccoli's video is a comic shoplifting spree through a Venice, California grocery store, and the song found a second life on Radio X in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004.
