About K-Rock

K-Rock (WXRK 92.3 FM) was New York City's best-known rock station of the late 1990s and 2000s, home to Howard Stern's morning show and an alternative-leaning playlist. RockLists holds the K-Rock Top 92.3 year-end countdowns from 1999 through 2004 and its Top 92 Party Songs of All-Time.

WXRK began broadcasting as K-Rock in 1985 as a classic rock station, and in November of that year it became the flagship of Howard Stern's morning show, which anchored the station for the next twenty years. In 1996 K-Rock shifted from classic rock to a modern rock format aimed at the fans who had made alternative music the sound of the decade.

The station was owned by Infinity Broadcasting, which became part of CBS Radio. Through the late 1990s and early 2000s K-Rock's playlist blended alternative hits with the harder active-rock sound of bands such as Korn, Staind and Linkin Park, and its year-end Top 92.3 countdown reflected both.

When Howard Stern left for satellite radio at the end of 2005, WXRK flipped to a talk format branded Free FM. Rock returned in 2007, but in March 2009 the station switched to Top 40 as 92.3 Now, ending the K-Rock era in New York.
