Tucked into Wasting Light, the seventh Foo Fighters album, in 2011, "These Days" is the one Dave Grohl has named as his favorite of everything he's ever written. It earns the title: a verse that almost hushes, then a chorus that tears the roof off, Grohl's voice shredding on the way up while three guitars, his own, Chris Shiflett's and Pat Smear's, pile on behind him and Taylor Hawkins and Nate Mendel push the whole thing forward. Butch Vig produced it and Alan Moulder mixed it.
Rolling Stone's writers put it fourth among the year's best singles, and Wayne Isham's video stitched it together from live footage of the band's shows. In August 2012 they played it at Pukkelpop for the people killed or hurt when a violent storm tore through the festival a year before.
