“Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin

"Stairway to Heaven" is the long, slow climb at the center of Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album, released by Atlantic on 8 November 1971, sandwiched between "The Battle of Evermore" and "Misty Mountain Hop". Jimmy Page wrote the music and Robert Plant the words, and Page produced it himself, with Andy Johns engineering and mixing and Peter Grant as executive producer. The sessions took place at Basing Street Studios.

The song moves in three stages, each one faster and louder than the last. It opens hushed and pastoral, acoustic guitar and recorders weaving a folk-rock spell, before the electric instruments creep in. Then the whole thing catches fire: a hard-rock charge crowned by a Page guitar solo that tears through the arrangement and Plant wailing over the top, until it all drops away and he closes the song alone, with no band behind him.

Remarkably, Atlantic never put it out as a single in the United States, yet in its day it was the song American FM listeners requested more than any other. VH1 later placed it third among the greatest rock songs, Rolling Stone ranked it 31st on its list of the greatest songs, and in November 2007 download sales tied to the Mothership collection sent it back into the British charts at number 37.
