About John Peel (BBC Radio 1)

John Peel (born John Robert Parker Ravenscroft, 1939-2004) was the longest-serving of BBC Radio 1's original disc jockeys, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in October 2004. He championed new and overlooked music across genres including punk, post-punk, indie rock, alternative rock and extreme metal, and hosted the in-studio 'Peel Sessions'. From 1976 his show featured the annual Festive Fifty, a chart of his listeners' favourite records of the year (and, in its earliest editions, of all time), voted for and counted down at the end of each year.
