Three Days Grace kicked off their third album, Life Starts Now, with "Break", sent out as the lead single on September 1, 2009, three weeks ahead of the record, after the band teased it on their website that August. It's alternative metal with the brakes off: a stomping riff, a chorus built for a fist in the air, and Adam Gontier bellowing about shaking loose from whatever has you pinned.

The whole band wrote it, Gontier with Neil Sanderson, Barry Stock and Brad Walst, and they pitched it as a turn toward hope. Walst said it was about getting clear of bad influences, and Stock put it simply: if you hate where you are, it's on you to bust out. It has held up, too; the RIAA certified it double platinum in November 2025.
