"Don't Do Me Like That" was the lead single from Damn the Torpedoes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' third album, on Backstreet Records, but the song had been kicking around for years: Petty first cut it as a demo in 1974 with his band Mudcrutch. He thought about handing it to the J. Geils Band before producer Jimmy Iovine persuaded him to keep it for the record.
Smart move. It became one of the band's most popular singles in North America and the only song under their own name to crack the Billboard Hot 100's top 10 (they climbed to No. 3 later, backing Stevie Nicks on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"). It did even better in Canada, at No. 3. Britain never came around: Capital Radio played it in the summer of 1980, but it missed the Top 75.
