"Here Comes My Girl" comes off Damn the Torpedoes, the 1979 album that broke Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wide open, and it was born the same week as "Refugee", out of a Mike Campbell demo. The chorus was there from the start; the verses weren't. Petty wrestled with the words, trying the verses one way and another, until he landed on a half-spoken narration in the manner of Blondie and the Shangri-Las, and the song snapped into focus. The chorus, he said, owed its spark to the Byrds.
Jimmy Iovine produced with Petty, Shelly Yakus engineered, and the band is all over it: Petty and Campbell on twelve-strings, Campbell adding slide, Benmont Tench on piano, organ and harmonium, Ron Blair on bass and Stan Lynch on drums.
