"Way Down We Go" is the slow-burning blues that carried Iceland's Kaleo onto American rock radio, the second single from their second album, A/B, in 2016. JJ Julius Son wrote it, and the arrangement stays spare and ominous: Rubin Pollock's guitar, Daniel Kristjánsson's bass and Davíð Antonsson's percussion leave plenty of dark room, with strings from Björk Óskarsdóttir, Siun Milne, Karl Pestka and Hallgrímur Jónas Jensson and a full choir swelling behind it. Mike Crossey and Arnar Guðjónsson produced with the band, and Andrew Scheps mixed.

It went to number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs and Rock Airplay charts, and the band later recorded a live performance inside the magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur, a dormant Icelandic volcano, about as fitting a room as this song could ask for.
