"Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)" kicked off the campaign for Run, AWOLNATION's second album, in 2015, and it handed Aaron Bruno's band their first number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. Bruno, who wrote it alone, has admitted he would rather have led with the album track "Windows", but picking the single was a joint call with the label, and he settled on the middle ground.
Listeners have heard it as the band staring down its dread of falling short, and Bruno looking back over the grim stretch of his career it took to break through, set in C major at a steady 120 beats a minute. Director Hayley Young filmed the video in one unbroken take in Seattle, the camera drifting past a few actors before locking on Bruno and tracking every twitch of his face as he sings.
