Foo Fighters dropped "Run" out of nowhere in June 2017, with no warning beyond some vague talk of working on music, and it was their first single since "Saint Cecilia" two years earlier. They'd been playing it live since February, and it turned out to be the first taste of their ninth album, Concrete and Gold. Greg Kurstin produced it and adds piano, and all six members share the writing credit: Dave Grohl sings lead and plays guitar with Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, Nate Mendel is on bass, Taylor Hawkins drums, Rami Jaffee layers on Mellotron, organ and keys, and the whole band piles in on percussion.
It's hard rock with the throttle open, and it paid off: it topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart, their seventh song to get there, and won the Grammy for Best Rock Song.
