Tucked onto Melophobia, Cage the Elephant's third album from 2013, "Cigarette Daydreams" is the moment the band stops thrashing and lets the melancholy in: a soft, brooding sway and a wistful melody far from their usual rowdiness. Matt Shultz has said it grew out of something personal and that the words simply arrived; when he rang producer Jay Joyce partway through writing it, Joyce told him to finish the thing right then. Shultz was after bare, naked honesty, and that is how it sounds.

Sent out as a single on August 26, 2014, it went to number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, the album's second after "Come a Little Closer" and the band's fifth in all. The black-and-white video spins a fractured, hallucinatory love story, and in late 2024 it became their first song to pass a billion Spotify streams.
