"Back to the Shack" opened the campaign for Weezer's ninth album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End, arriving as its first single in July 2014, and it's Rivers Cuomo waving a white flag at his own recent past. He wrote it as an answer to the band's last few albums, wanting to get back to their roots, and Ric Ocasek produced.
Cuomo sings lead and plays guitar alongside Brian Bell, Scott Shriner holds down the bass, both men chip in backing vocals, and Patrick Wilson pounds the drums; Tom Lord-Alge mixed it, and Shawn Everett added production and engineering. Cuomo wrote most of it; co-writer Jacob Kasher Hindlin, as Karl Koch told it, earned his half by singing the title from the couch while Cuomo strummed. Fans even talked Cuomo into changing a phrase in the bridge. Reviews were mostly warm.
