"I Dare You" was the third single from I See You, the xx's third album, put out on Young Turks in 2017, and it's the rare xx song that seems to have wandered out into the daylight. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis called it "uncharacteristically sunlit"; Entertainment Weekly heard a warm, uptempo rush of being completely swept up in someone. Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim wrote the words and share the vocals over her guitar and his bass, while Jamie xx plays drums, synths and keys, co-produced it with Rodaidh McDonald and mixed it himself.
They had already debuted it on Saturday Night Live in November 2016, next to lead single "On Hold", and brought it to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert the following spring. Alasdair McLellan, who had shot the clips for "On Hold" and "Say Something Loving", directed the video.
