"Weird Goodbyes" teams the National with Bon Iver, and it belongs to the First Two Pages of Frankenstein chapter of the band's story: their ninth album, released on 4AD in April 2023 and produced by the band themselves at Long Pond studio in upstate New York. Aaron Dessner wrote the music and Matt Berninger the words, and the guest makes sense, since Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon also work together as Big Red Machine; Dessner made their second album, How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?, while the National were apart.
With touring wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic after I Am Easy to Find, Berninger made his solo record Serpentine Prison, Bryce Dessner worked on film scores and classical pieces from France, and work on new National music stalled while Berninger went through a dark stretch in which neither lyrics nor melodies would come.
