“Mess of Me” by Switchfoot

"Mess of Me" was the first single from Switchfoot's seventh studio album, Hello Hurricane, and it spent the summer of 2009 on festival stages before the record arrived. It started as "I Saw Satan Fall Like Lightning", a funkier demo from pre-production sessions with Charlie Peacock; the song changed shape, but the opening riff survived every version, and that early take later surfaced on the Building a Hurricane bonus disc.

Jon and Tim Foreman wrote it, Mike Elizondo produced, and Adam Hawkins engineered and mixed. The band debuted it at Michigan's Big Ticket Festival in June 2009, and a month later Jon Foreman told a Kings Fest crowd in Virginia that, in his book, this one was the single. It went out to modern, mainstream and active rock radio all at once.
