"Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" began as Skrillex putting Native Instruments' FM8 synthesizer through its paces, a test that turned into the first song he wrote for the EP that took its name, released through Mau5trap and Big Beat in October 2010. It's a dubstep track built on whiplash, and critics fixed on the gulf between the way it opens and the way the drop lands.
The Grammys handed it Best Dance Recording in 2012, it went double platinum in the US, Australia and Sweden, and it has soundtracked all sorts of media since. It keeps turning up on critics' lists of the best EDM songs ever made, and it gets the credit for putting dubstep in front of a mainstream audience.
