"The Shock of the Lightning" kicked the door open for Dig Out Your Soul, the seventh Oasis studio album, going out as its first single in September 2008. Noel Gallagher wrote it and admitted it was cut in a hurry: what you hear is essentially the demo, and he reckoned that rush is exactly where its energy comes from. He credited the krautrock of Can and Neu! more than the band's own "Rock 'n' Roll Star", and the whole thing charges forward with Zak Starkey pounding the drums.
Liam Gallagher sings it with the old sneer intact, Noel adds backing vocals and electronics, Gem Archer and Andy Bell swap guitars, bass and keyboards, and Bell even slips a tambura into the mix, which David Sardy handled. Radio got it early: Noel turned up on Chris Moyles's BBC Radio 1 show in August to put together a remix.
