"Daylight" was the first single from Grand, Matt and Kim's second album, out on Fader Label in 2009, and it's a pure sugar rush: Matt Johnson on vocals and keyboards, Kim Schifino on drums, and the pair of them sounding like they can't get to the chorus fast enough. Under the grin, though, it's a homesick song, sprinkled with little snapshots of life on Grand Street in Brooklyn.
It took seven months to get right. Johnson recorded, produced and mixed it himself, Colby Dix helped out on production and recording, and Joe LaPorta mastered it at The Lodge in New York City. Then it went everywhere: Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August 2009, the NBA Live 10 soundtrack as its lone non-hip-hop track, a remix with De La Soul in FIFA 10, even a Simlish version in The Sims 3: World Adventures, plus a video that passed 23 million YouTube views.
