"Pretty Pimpin'" came out on Matador in 2015, from Kurt Vile's album b’lieve i’m goin down…, and it's the rare slacker tune that actually has a spring in its step. Vile wrote it on his own, and it ambles along on a bright, circling guitar figure and that half-awake drawl of his, catchy without ever looking like it broke a sweat.
Critics took to it right away: Pitchfork named it Best New Track, Spin called it the jauntiest, most engaging single he'd ever pushed at radio, and The Guardian counted it among his loveliest songs. It climbed all the way to number one on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart, the first time Vile had topped any Billboard chart at all.
