"'Cause I'm a Man" was the second single from Currents, Tame Impala's third studio album, in 2015, and it's Kevin Parker's show from top to bottom: he wrote it, sang it, played it, recorded it, produced it and mixed it himself, for Modular. Following "Let It Happen", it pushed Parker's voice up front, clearer in the mix than on any earlier Tame Impala song, chasing the dreamy, silvery vocal sound he loves.
That exposure didn't come easy. Parker was uneasy with his own singing, and the sessions tipped into obsession: he has put the count at more than 1,057 partial takes of the vocal for either this song or "The Less I Know the Better", though he couldn't remember which. As for what it's about, he put it plainly: how weak men are, and all the excuses they, himself included, keep making.
