"No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross" was the lead single from Carrie & Lowell, Sufjan Stevens' seventh album, arriving digitally on Asthmatic Kitty in February 2015, with a one-track seven-inch following on Joyful Noise Recordings in March. Stevens wrote it alone, and it sits tenth on the record.
It's the man stripped nearly bare. Pitchfork named it Best New Track, and Jeremy D. Larson counted just three ingredients, Stevens' voice, his acoustic guitar and a bed of white noise, with the finger-picking and hushed singing pulled in close enough to feel inches away. Critics loved it, and Larson heard a pendulum swing away from the high-concept Age of Adz toward plain, old-fashioned songwriting.
