"Video Game" was the second single from The Ascension, Sufjan Stevens' eighth studio album, out in 2020 on his own Asthmatic Kitty label, and it's close to a one-man show. Stevens wrote, arranged, produced, recorded and mixed it himself, singing and playing drums, drum machine, percussion and analog synthesizer, with Casey Foubert on bass and James McAlister adding extra drums and percussion; the two also pitched in on engineering.
What comes out is glossy synth-pop with a sting in it, aimed at what social media is doing to the rest of us. A music video arrived alongside the single.
