"Go to War" was the first single from The Stories We Tell Ourselves, the fifth Nothing More album, in 2017, and it was born in a rage. The band usually tinkered with songs for months, but this one came together in roughly half an hour, with frontman and chief writer Jonny Hawkins making up the words on the spot. He had just come off a furious phone fight as an eight-year relationship fell apart, and for a self-described laid-back guy, he was as angry as he'd ever been.
That heat is all over the track. Hawkins wrote it with Ben Anderson, Will Hoffman, Daniel Oliver, David Pramik and Mark Vollelunga, and Hoffman produced it with the band. It went to the top of Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and picked up Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.
