Muse started the Simulation Theory era well ahead of the album: "Dig Down" arrived with its video on 18 May 2017 as the first single from what became their eighth studio album in 2018, produced by the band with Mike Elizondo. Matt Bellamy wrote it as an answer to the gloom of the moment, a shot of hope meant to remind people that they can still decide to change the world.
Bellamy handles guitar, keyboards and lead vocals, Christopher Wolstenholme plays bass and sings backup, Dominic Howard drums, Elizondo adds keyboards, and Michael Freeman and Mark "Spike" Stent share the mix, with the synth-pop gloss laid on thick. The deluxe edition turns all that inside out with an Acoustic Gospel Version, the electronics gone in favor of acoustic guitar, piano and a choir.
