"Curl of the Burl" was the second single from The Hunter, Mastodon's fifth studio album, and Reprise sent it out on August 16, 2011. Mike Elizondo produced, Adam Hawkins recorded and mixed, and the whole band shares the writing credit. Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders pass the vocals around, with Hinds and Bill Kelliher on guitars.
It gave them their best showing yet on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, peaking at number 15, a mark that stood until "Show Yourself" from Emperor of Sand beat it, and it drew a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. The video, directed by Roboshobo, is gloriously unhinged: Bill Oberst Jr. chops down a tree marked with a warning sign, snorts its sawdust, sprouts an extra pair of arms and turns into a rampaging lumberjack, until a band of women strip him, find he's nothing but a log and set him on fire.
