"The Step and the Walk" comes from Neptune, the second studio album by London's Duke Spirit, released on February 4, 2008, through the independent label You Are Here. Liela Moss wrote it with Luke Ford, and Tom Elmhirst mixed it. It was also the band's last album with Dan Higgins, their original lead guitarist, on board.
Moss is the reason to lean in: The Independent heard a voice with enough power and fight to stand up to a band going flat out at full volume, and The Times singled out the album's well-built pop songs with an art-rock lean. That's the record this song lives on, one that critics heard swinging between girl-group swoon and fuzzed-out roar.
