"Ghosts Again" arrived in February 2023 as the lead single from Memento Mori, Depeche Mode's 15th album, and it was the first music the band put out after losing co-founder and keyboardist Andy Fletcher in May 2022. Martin Gore wrote it with an unlikely partner, Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, and the song stares straight at mortality: how easily a life slips away, what might wait on the other side, and the faint hope of finding each other again as ghosts.
For all that, it doesn't sink. Dave Gahan heard melancholy and joy held in balance, Gore an upbeat lift he never tired of, and the mid-tempo synth-pop glides on James Ellis Ford's drums, synths and piano, with strings from Davide Rossi. Ford produced it with Marta Salogni, who also engineered and mixed.
