"Take It Or Leave It" swaggers out of Melophobia, Cage the Elephant's third studio album, an RCA release from October 2013, and the writing credit takes in the whole band: Matt Shultz, Brad Shultz, Jared Champion, Daniel Tichenor and Lincoln Parish, the lead guitarist on his last album with them. Jay Joyce produced and recorded it for a record cut at St. Charles in Nashville, Tom Elmhirst mixed it and Jason Hall engineered.
The album's title means a fear of music, and the band read it as a vow not to pose: they walled themselves off from other people's records while they worked, and Matt Shultz cast the whole project as a fight to stay honest and transparent. This song sounds like the payoff, wiry and loose-limbed, with a hook that doesn't strain for effect.
