"Hymnostic" comes from Big Red Machine's self-titled 2018 debut, the project that pairs Aaron Dessner of the National with Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon, a record made mostly in Dessner's shed studio in the Hudson Valley. Dessner and Vernon wrote the music, but the words came from outside the duo: the lyric is credited to Ragnar Kjartansson.
The vocals are a crowd affair, with Vernon joined by Lisa Hannigan, Richard Reed Parry, Kate Stables and Emily and Jessica Staveley-Taylor. Dessner plays piano and bass pedals, Vernon electric guitar, Brad Cook bass, J. T. Bates drums, Nick Lloyd Hammond organ and Ben Lanz trombone. Cook, Dessner and Vernon produced it, and Jonathan Low recorded and mixed.
