Sam Smith's debut album, In the Lonely Hour, turned on "Stay with Me", a 2014 ballad with gospel in its bones and about the most exposed request a pop song can make: a plea to a one-night stand not to leave come morning. Smith produced it and wrote it with Jimmy Napes and William Phillips, and the melody turned out to sit so close to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" that Petty and Jeff Lynne were later added as co-writers.
It became the biggest single of Smith's career so far, going to number one in the UK, Canada and New Zealand and stopping at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and it took Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammys.
