"Tennis Court" trailed "Royals" out of Pure Heroine, Lorde's debut album, as its second single, issued to New Zealand and Australia on 7 June 2013; Europe got an EP under its name that very day, padded out with three more tracks. She wrote it with Joel Little, who produced, played, engineered and mixed it, and the pair keep things stark: hip hop beats, minimal synths and an electronic pulse, with art pop and downtempo moods bleeding in at the edges.
Lorde's lyrics weigh fame still new enough to feel strange, a sharp new read on how the music business works, and a pang of nostalgia for Auckland. It went to number one in New Zealand, and Joel Kefali's one-shot video is nothing but Lorde staring down the camera the whole way through.
