"american dream" shares its name with American Dream, the 2017 album that brought LCD Soundsystem back after a split of nearly five years, and it arrived ahead of the record: on May 5, 2017, it came out paired with "Call the Police" as the record's joint lead single. The album, their fifth, out on DFA and Columbia, was their first in seven years, since This Is Happening in 2010.
James Murphy wrote it alone and handles a lot of it himself: drums, drum machine, Minimoog, glockenspiel and analog synthesizer, the last shared with Al Doyle. Murphy, Doyle and Korey Richey all sing on it, while Murphy, Richey and Riley MacIntyre supply the finger snaps; Richey engineered and Murphy mixed it.
