Tom Johnston wrote "Rockin' Down the Highway" for Toulouse Street, the Doobie Brothers' second album, in 1972, and it's the sound of a band with the windows rolled down and no intention of stopping for gas. That November it rode along as the B-side of "Jesus Is Just Alright", which undersold it badly.

The band knew better. It became a fixture of their live shows, turned up on one best-of after another, from Best of The Doobies in 1976 through Greatest Hits in 2001, and when they put out a concert record in 1996 they named it after this song: Rockin' down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert. Brad Paisley rode shotgun when the Doobies cut it again for Southbound in 2014. Not bad for a flip side.
