Billie Eilish's third album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, arrived in May 2024 with "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" tucked inside, and by July it had been promoted to the record's second official single. The song is a family affair: Eilish wrote it with Finneas O'Connell, and her brother then cut it in his Los Angeles home studio, producing it and playing nearly everything on it, bass, guitar, synthesizers, keyboards, percussion, even glockenspiel, with Chaz Sexton on drums.
It's a love song that wants forever, a glossy blend of baroque pop, indie pop and new wave shimmer, and Eilish sings it light and floating, as if devotion were the easiest thing in the world. The world agreed: it topped the Billboard Global 200, finished 2024 as the fourth best-selling song on the planet by the IFPI's count, and earned nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys.
