"Phoenix" comes from Big Red Machine's 2021 album How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?, credited with Fleet Foxes and Anaïs Mitchell, and it's a crowded, communal affair. Aaron Dessner, Anaïs Mitchell, Robin Pecknold and Justin Vernon wrote it together, and Mitchell, Pecknold and Vernon all sing.
Dessner produced it and plays nearly everything in reach: acoustic, electric and bass guitars, piano, synthesizer and shakers. Pecknold adds piano and mellotron and a hand in the production, J. T. Bates plays drums, and a small brass section of Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands on trumpet with Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch on trombone gives it a warm, burnished glow.
